Tarte Tatin

  • 6 mere
  • 100g unt
  • 100g zahar
  • condimente (scortisoara, cardamom, cuisoare, nucsoara, vanilie)
  • aluat de patiserie (foietaj)

AlinaDinu

Review "Surprise me" - Sophie Kinsella

Surprise Me by Sophie Kinsella

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Description

After being together for ten years, Sylvie and Dan have a comfortable home, fulfilling jobs, beautiful twin girls, and communicate so seamlessly, they finish each other's sentences. They have a happy marriage and believe they know everything there is to know about each other. Until it's casually mentioned to them that they could be together for another sixty-eight years... and panic sets in.
They quickly decide to create little surprises for each other, to keep their relationship fresh and fun. But in their pursuit of Project Surprise Me - anything from unexpected gifts to restaurant dates to photo shoots - mishaps arise with disastrous and comical results.
Gradually, the surprises turn to shocking discoveries. And when a scandal from the past is uncovered, they begin to wonder if they ever really knew each other after all...

I often feel a stab of guilt after reading one author’s book and not knowing about or read previous works, which is a little silly, because I can’t have time for all the good books (or bad ones) that are there.

I just finished “Surprise me” by Sophie Kinsella, her latest book, which I was attracted by its cover and description, leaving the impression of a funny love story. I haven’t read any of the author’s other books, so it was like a book blind-date, one of the things I often do when choosing a book, but learning afterwards about the author I felt cheated just because maybe I could’ve laughed and enjoyed more another story of hers.
Rewind to “Surprise me” and we have the story of a married couple, with ten years already in their archive, but learning that 68 more are to come to their marriage, they fear of the inevitable boredom. Quick on her feet, Sylvie devises for their future decades together a “surprise me project”, which she is sure she and Dan will happily and successfully bring to fruition. The story at this point sounds fun and interesting, questioning what ideas they can come up with and how amusing it can be if those surprises backfire. Also, what’s the rush?
So I was entertained with some funny and unpredictable scenes, thinking to myself there are more to come and the atmosphere is turning pretty good. I was in for a surprise, because why not? And where is too much excitement, there is also place for drama.
I expected a funny read start-end, sprinkled with the aforementioned drama, the story could’ve still been interesting, but as a result I was disappointed. Sylvie’s character is difficult to empathize with, even with all her hardships; Dan is absent; the focus of their relationship lost in a complicated turn of events. With all its funny parts, love, drama, lies and secrets, the idea of not really knowing the person closest to you, the book is hard to place in one category – good or bad. Personally, I liked the starting idea and hoped for more in the same rhythm, fact that led to my disappointment; so I didn’t laugh out loud, or felt sad on the characters’ behalf, but I can’t say it was a really bad book, just it lost its appeal somewhere on the way.

Review "How to stop time" - Matt Haig

martie 22, 2018 0 Comments

Tom Hazard are un secret periculos.

Daca ma concentrez asupra acestor idei, cartea are un mare potential.

Cartea este tradusa in limba romana si publicata de editura Nemira si o puteti gasi in librarii 😊

Description

I am old. That is the first thing to tell you. The thing you are least likely to believe. If you saw me you would probably think I was about forty, but you would be very wrong.Tom Hazard has a dangerous secret.
He may look like an ordinary 41-year-old, but owing to a rare condition, he's been alive for centuries. From Elizabethan England to Jazz Age Paris, from New York to the South Seas, Tom has seen a lot, and now craves an ordinary life. Always changing his identity to stay alive, Tom has the perfect cover - working as a history teacher at a London comprehensive. Here he can teach the kids about wars and witch hunts as if he'd never witnessed them first-hand. He can try and tame the past that is fast catching up with him.
The only thing Tom mustn't do is fall in love.

How to Stop TimeHow to Stop Time by Matt Haig
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Often times it happens that a book pops up in random places and winks at me to read it and I ignore the temptation for some reason, but in the end I give it a chance. Its description incites the reader and my imagination promises an exciting journey, but not all books stand to my expectation of falling in love with them.
A book of fiction, of fantasy, a story that entwines the past and the present, pencils a life across centuries in which love is a constant even if time flows and the world changes. “How to stop time” is a book about a fantastical life, family and love, acceptance of reality and the embrace of the future.
Tom Hazard is over 400 years old, but so many of those years he lived in fear; from the witches’ hunt of the past, to the experiments for medicine of today, he changed many identities and lived all over the world, with the help of the Albatross Society, in order to stay alive and keep looking for his daughter. He refuses to let go of the memory of the only woman he ever loved, but at the same time refuses to find love again.
If I concentrate on these ideas, the book has a good potential. It’s raw and impactful, filled with history and the struggle of living with so many memories. The main character’s view of present life is depressing but understandable, after so many years being on the run and chased by the past is hard to keep up. On the other hand he is kind of boring, the times have changed and he can embrace old and new joys of life, stop putting his trust in somebody else’s hands and live.
It was hard to focus on the present events of the story, the past kept interfering – scenes that were captivating and intriguing, which I thought will reflect in the present – and as much as the correlations were interesting, reading and keeping up with the important lost some appeal. What is beautiful is Tom’s devotement for love and family, which in the end awakens him and brings light to his life. Maybe as a moral, you can live 1000 years and still be unfulfilled, not learning how to enjoy the little things, letting fear dictate, but love is timeless.
Apart from the idea of living for centuries and the lessons in history, “How to stop time” was a sad reading and time spend contemplating if I loved it or it was a disappointment. I wanted badly to fall in love with it, but in my mind it doesn’t stand up with nothing particularly exciting.

Cheesecake

martie 20, 2018 1 Comments

Review "The woman in the window" - A. J. Finn

"The woman in the window" îi urmărește viața și activitățile Annei Fox, un bun psiholog, căreia un eveniment tragic îi declanșează agorafobia.

⭐⭐⭐☆

Description

It isn’t paranoia if it’s really happening . . .
Anna Fox lives alone, a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times . . . and spying on her neighbors.
Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins to crumble and its shocking secrets are laid bare.
What is real? What is imagined? Who is in danger? Who is in control? In this diabolically gripping thriller, no one—and nothing—is what it seems.

The Woman in the WindowThe Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Some books are easier to describe and get excited about a review; some just leave you speechless, but not necessarily in a good way. It so happens that my last reviews were also of thriller books, but in comparison, about the present book I don’t have many words and it didn’t leave me such a good feeling.
“The woman in the window” follows the life and activities of Anna Fox, a child psychologist, which after some traumatic events becomes agoraphobic. As the title suggests, she observes the outside world through her windows, spying on her neighbors’ activities for some entertainment. Being severely medicated and drunk, on such a routinely activity she witnesses a disturbing event. When nobody believes her, she starts putting her already fragile sanity into question, but she knows that what she saw was real.
The book’s actions stretch on a relatively short period of time, the chapters concise. The story and the plot’s intriguing events are slow delivered, the first part of the book a little frustrating, trying to sort and figure out the characters and which may play an essential role. It can be said that is suspenseful, but for me at some point was a little boring. The interesting part comes and it plays with the reader’s mind and imagination; Anna’s past brings some light into the present, the events tragic but somewhat predictable; the game of cat and mouse, the guess who, keeps you for some short chapters’ reading on pins and needles, the twist, happening in the final scenes, captivating.
In its entirety the book is well written, making references to a multitude of black-and-white movies, showcasing the struggle with a terrible phobia, the coping methods some choose to survive a tragic life event, and even the little joys you can take in these circumstances. Even so, the “The woman in the window”, for me, lacks that feeling of excitement, of breathless anticipation.

Un elefant se legana...

martie 11, 2018 0 Comments

Continuam seria animalutelor crosetate si adaugam in gasca simpatica o elefantica ce iubeste florile

Adaugand constant cate o papusa, curând vom avea o intreaga gradina zoologica in miniatura.

Review "The wife between us" - Greer Hendricks, Sarah Pekkanen

martie 07, 2018 0 Comments

Nu poti ghici ce comoara ascunde o carte in paginile sale doar citind o descriere sau privindu-i coperta. Scufunda-te orbeste intr-o poveste, simte-i pulsul si asculta-i soaptele, te ratacesti pentru cateva momente dar in final vei zambi, satisfacut.

"The wife between us" surprinde printr-o actiune foarte bine structurata, personaje pline de mister si o poveste ce te tine in suspans cu fiecare capitol.

Nellie are 27 ani, o invatatoare ce isi iubeste elevii si doreste sa isi gaseasca drumul in New York, fugind de trecutul sumbru, pe care incearca sa il lase in Florida. Cineva o are in priviri si ii stie orice miscare.

The Wife Between UsThe Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“The wife between us” by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen surprises the reader with its good structured action, characters full of mystery and a story that keeps you guessing and unprepared with each chapter. The book is divided into three parts, leaving the feel of a trilogy, each part ending with a boom of bewilderment.
Nellie is a twenty-seven year old preschool teacher, who hopes to find herself in New York City. She is shadowed by her past and her fears, which she tries to escape and leave behind in Florida. Her fiancé Richard seems the perfect lover and partner to help her start anew, with a bright future ahead. Even if she doesn’t know much about his former wife, Nellie feels like she finally found her safety and happiness within their relationship, but soon after their engagement some mysterious phone calls start to bring old fears back. Someone is watching her and knows every step she is taking.
In their seven year marriage, Vanessa and Richard had it all: love, happiness, sadness, disappointment, hurt, betrayal. Vanessa relinquished everything to have a future and a family with Richard, losing touch with her friends and relatives, devoting her time to be a perfect wife. But when their marriage starts to take a downturn Vanessa questions her reality. Now Richard has left her for a younger woman and she must open her eyes and mend her life, but there are always two parts of the truth in a marriage and she is not blameless.
Her past blinded her of reality, her fears made her feel paranoid, her love secluded her from family, so her revelations impel her to escape and unmask him. She was young and naïve, she thought she found her Prince, he was always there for her, knowing how to console her, knowing everything about her, but now she sees the truth, the sick man that he is and she will not let him ruin another’s life.
Vanessa is a complicated character, you don’t know in the beginning what her story is going to disclose and how it will come to end. She is a strong woman, sacrificing herself and enduring hard moments, she is smart and conniving. In the first part of the book, her story alternates between her present, her struggle with life after her husband left her, and her younger self, an enamored woman who sees life with rose colored glasses. Part two reveals more about Vanessa’s past, her college experiences and traumas that will follow her to New York, her life as a married woman with Richard, all the hardships which make her lose herself and set up her doubts. Her wish to escape Richard’s manipulations is hard achieved; in the conclusive part of the book, Vanessa’s plans, although successful, take a turn which she didn’t predict and now she must make it right.
The book presents the story as what was, what has been, what is and what is happening, not in this order precisely. It is a thriller full of twists, flashbacks, ghosts of characters’ past and great suspense.
“The wife between us” is my 5 stars book since the beginning of this year. I am a picky reader and my ratings are rarely so good. An extraordinary book, in my opinion, brimming with mystery, scenes that keep you enthralled.

Review "I know my name" - C. J. Cooke

martie 01, 2018 0 Comments

Cu cat zilele trec, ea incearca sa isi puna gandurile in ordine, insa nimic nu are sens.

I Know My NameI Know My Name by C.J. Cooke
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Every once in a while I feel the need to make my thoughts race in a mad pursuit of a mystery, the thrill of a story that makes you stop for a moment and analyze its meaning.
“I know my name” by C. J. Cooke is that psychological thriller that makes you ache, think and feel for the characters and also makes you wonder how and gives you a perspective of the labyrinth that is the mind. The book is not singular in its genre and I’ve read similar stories, but with each one I experience newness.
Washed ashore on a beach in a beautiful scenery of an island in the Aegean Sea, a woman is saved by four strangers, there on a writing retreat. When her senses return she realizes she has no recollection of how she got there, where there is, who the people who saved her are and more importantly who she is. In the weeks that pass on the island she will discover her name is Eloise, that her saviors don’t seem as much as strangers, that her memory tries to place her in a reality that is hard to grasp but slowly returning to her.
Across land and sea, in London, Lochlan Shelley’s wife has gone missing, leaving their two small children alone in the house. No one knows where she could possibly have gone, with nothing amiss in the house and all her belongings intact. At once with the police involvement, secrets deep buried rise and Lochlan now learns more about his wife and starts fearing for their future.
A journey of self discovery: Lochlan realizing that family is more important than anything, looking in the past and acknowledge his mistakes and trump them; Eloise trying to escape from the isolation that her mind stranded her to, only by defeating her demons and accept herself, the island a beautiful metaphor for her thoughts and feelings.
A good reading, a beautifully written book and a story for the mind and soul. I liked the mix of the Greek myths, well chosen considering the place where the story’s action is placed, with the intricacies of life and mind and love.
The book was an easy read, I finished it in one day. It wasn’t particularly suspenseful, I grasped the mystery early on, but that may be also because of all the other similar books I’ve read; though at some point I asked myself if it was a “Gone Girl” action. All in all the story is good researched and has a happy end, which is a win.
