Into the Water by Paula Hawkins

Into the Water: The Number One Bestseller by Paula Hawkins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

In the last days before her death, Nel called her sister. Jules didn’t pick up the phone, ignoring her plea for help.
Now Nel is dead. They say she jumped. And Jules has been dragged back to the one place she hoped she had escaped for good, to care for the teenage girl her sister left behind.
But Jules is afraid. So afraid. Of her long-buried memories, of the old Mill House, of knowing that Nel would never have jumped.
And most of all she’s afraid of the water, and the place they call the Drowning Pool . . .

It was not as hard a reading as other mystery, thriller books I read, despite the large number of characters and points of view. I usually imagine what I'm reading as a movie, which in this case was not hard at all; not surprinsing actually, knowing Paula Hawkins. The writing is exceptional, the author not wasting space with unnecessary comments and descriptions boring the reader.
From the first introduction with the characters, some of them have their road quite clear in the story, although some are well planted to sustain the suspense. The story takes you from mythical witches to haunted souls. Although the plot surrounds the death of Nel Abbott, all the characters are exorcised of their pasts. What connects them all is the river that flows through the city; a place like a siren song for "troublesome women", who end up in the "Drowning Pool". Young girls, mothers, all find their end in the river. Not all deaths are suicides and not all is what the town people know. Nel Abbott, writer and photographer, is fascinated with water and its power and trying to write a book about the history of their town's mysterious deaths, which is not well taken by the parties involved. The story follows the loss of loved ones, a forbidden love story, fear of the past and truths well kept.
It was an interesting reading, maybe somewhat predictable in some scenes and making me losing my focus in others. It didn't make me tear or shout internally and it didn't keep me on pins and needles, nevertheless I rate 4 stars.
